Chariots of Fire

“The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of thousands; The LORD is among them as in Sinai, in the Holy Place.” (Psalm 68:17 NKJV)

It can be overwhelming…even daunting! Whenever we see the research available on how the porn industry is harming children and adults and marriages and communities, we can be tempted to wring our hands and just give up. Then we read about its financial clout. Best estimates put the pornography industry at a net worth of 97 billion dollars, enough to feed 4.8 billion people a day.

While Hollywood makes about 600 movies per year and nets around 10 billion in profit, the pornography industry makes 13,000 films a year and makes 15 billion. Worse, $3,000 is spent on porn every second. How can you, an individual believer, possibly contend with such a behemoth?

Such was the case with the prophet Elisha who was trapped in Dothan by the Aramean army (2 Kings 6). You see, Elisha had been defeating the Aramean’s war plans by always revealing them to the king of Israel. But now he was surrounded (as are we). A vast army of horses and chariots came by night and surrounded the city where he was staying. There was seemingly no way out. Elisha’s servant got up early that morning and went out to survey the situation. It was alarming! He turned to his master and said, “Alas, what shall we do?”

Indeed! What shall do in the face of an enemy of such formidable and universal might? Elisha’s answer to his servant was this incongruous reply: “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” You see, the prophet of God could see something that his servant Gehazi could not see. Elisha then prayed that God would open his eyes to the unseen world and, when God granted his petition, Gehazi saw that “the mountains were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6:17b)

As you live your day, don’t forget to “look unto the hills” and be reminded that you serve a mighty God whose armies can sweep away the filth that we see around us with a legion of mighty chariots. Even so, Lord Jesus, make it so and allow us to be a part of that blessed victory.
